Graphic novel, anyone?

I've registered for a course this spring on graphic novels - never read (have I even seen?) one. Have you read any?

I'm still working my way through the Doc Ford series set in Florida; however, "working" isn't really an appropriate word to use, since they are such fast reads. Fun to watch the characters develop with each book (there are 17 and I'm beginning #6). Then just before we leave for Key West, I will re-read a Hemingway title....

  1. Persepolis, by Marjane Setrapi.
This is the only graphic novel I've ever read, but I loved it! It's an autobiographical account of growing up in Iran during the Islamic revolution. It's funny, biting, revealing. Highly recommended.

  2. I bought Persepolis when it was the "One Book, One Philadelphia" choice. It may be time to read it now. . .

(Evelyn, what is the Doc Ford series?)

  3. I read Watchmen before the movie came out since it's supposed to be such a classic and was surprised how much I enjoyed it, despite some sexism and violence (maybe I have an inner teenage boy?!). Also read and most emphatically did not like V for Vendetta and the first Sandman book--bad stuff happens in those two *shudder*. I read the first Maus book a very long time ago and don't remember much about it, but think I enjoyed that one. I believe I also have a copy of Persepolis kicking around somewhere that I have been meaning to read!

  4. My book group did Maus last year. I didn't really enjoy the graphic novel itself but thought the story line helped hold it together.

  5. Doc Ford is the main character in the Randy Wayne White Florida-based novels. A solitary man, biologist with a CIA-type background, who methodically solves problems his friends and families ensnare him in. I'm growing fond of him...can't wait to see a bit of the "old Florida" that is described.
